Farmers Market Goes Digital

San Marcos- Texas State University hosted its semi-regular farmers market Wednesday afternoon in the quad. Vendors varied from free range pork in tamales to custom craft jewelry.

For some, purchasing goods from these small vendors has been a hassle as a we progress becoming an ever cashless society. Recently many of these vendors have adopted Square, a mobile payment application for smart phones and tablets.

I walked through the quad taking in all the sights and smells and came upon a tamale tent. The Gardener's Feast accepted all four major credit cards, and since I had spent what little cash I had left for lemonade, I decided to pay with plastic.

It was a great seamless experience for me. Although it occasionally has hiccups. The reason I had used my cash for lemonade was because the previous merchant was having some connection issues on their mobile phone.

This of course is expected, and sometimes has to be dealt with. This by no means makes what Square, Inc offers a bad product.

The benefit for most small business is the ability to capture customers it may have lost out on. The free app and card reader are what makes this most attractive to these businesses. The other advantage is the small fee, that's taken off each transaction to pay the credit card companies.

There are other companies that offer this type of mobile payment, like Intuit Inc, the maker of Turbo Tax that integrates directly into your taxes at the end of the year, but Square has received much more attention lately.

Starbucks recently ditched its previous point of sale machines with Square registers. Patrons can walk into the store and if they have Square Wallet set up, pay just by using their name.

Starbucks is the first major corporation to adopt this technology on a large scale, but it's really the smaller merchants that are benefitting most.

Apple CEO Apologizes for Maps

Apple CEO, Tim Cook- Courtesy Wikipedia
In a press release released Friday Apple CEO, Tim Cook, apologized for the discontent caused by the latest update to Maps in its newest iOS software.
He said Apple is working to improve the software but until then offers alternatives for consumers including Bing, Mapquest and even the ousted Google maps via adding a link to the homepage.
Google posted instructions on Google+ for users to add maps to their iPhone homepages.

Apple also removed claims Maps is "the most beautiful, most powerful, most powerful mapping service ever." from its website.

An Apple Users First Week with Android

After using a Motorola Xoom running Android 4.1.1- known to most as Jelly Bean- I have so far enjoyed my experience outside of the Apple realm.
Err, outside is a stretch. Using an Android device in an iCloud world is more like an interjection, but welcomed.
The user interface is different, not in a bad way but different. The gestures or commands to access certain apps is different. The arrangement of apps on the homescreen is different; customizable. The addition of widgets to give info at a glance is different. The app availability is also different.
One problem most Android users won't experience is the truancy of Flash. Long touted as the differentiator in Android devices, it's suspiciously incompatible. A future update may include this feature but for now it seems odd. This doesn't present itself as much of a problem, since most web pages use HTML 5.
I mostly enjoy using my Xoom for reading RSS feeds through the Google Reader app, which opens from the widget. On iOS I would normally read in Flipboard, but again for some reason this Android build lacks support for the application.
Three devices in my home currently incorporate iCloud: my Macbook Pro (Mountain Lion), iPad 2 (iOS 6) and iPhone 5 (iOS 6). After the latest iOS update, iCLoud finally seems to be in perfect harmony on all of my devices. Yet here sits my Xoom; unable to view iMessages, incapable of viewing iCal and devoid of any of my music in iTunes. Its redeeming value however, is Google.
Gmail presents itself fabulously, even adding email accounts in the settings is a breeze. Chrome gives me a shared view of all open pages across platforms, and Google Drive stores all my files to open and even edit Docs (which is now incorporated into Drive).
The incorporation of my Xoom seems to juxtaposed my perfectly polished Apple life, but really it just creates a paradigm shift. I like to use it as an auxiliary device to view TV Guide, read, browse,  check e-mail, and just to display the time in my living room.
For now, iOS, Android, and me are perfectly cozy.

Updating Process

Recently I have been attending a lot of very interesting lectures at Texas State University. As an advertising major I am constantly looking for ways to stay informed and trying to stay in touch with trends. I have started updating all of my profiles to represent a more professional theme across all social networking sites.

These days, maintaining your online identity is just as- if not more- important that your real identity and reputation. I have also been thinking of ways to grow my networks and reach the people I want to stay in contact with the most. In advertising, brand awareness is critical for the success of a company. The same applies to individual identity, after all perception is reality and ones own personal image is a brand. Thus, when growing ones network such as my own I must consider who am I reaching and what perception do they have of me.

At a lecture on "Your Social Media Toolkit" this past Wednesday, I learned of some really great sites that are (mostly) free that can help gauge brand awareness and effectiveness. Here they are:

RSS feeds are a great way to keep in the know with important brands (Google reader)
Radian6 graphically displays frequency of posts regarding clients and displays all public posts.
tweetreach.com shows how many followers a tweet or topic was reached to.
compete.com gives website analytics so you can see how influential a website is
quantcast.com also gives analytics but also displays demographics
klout.com measures personal influence on social networking sites
alltop.com provides links to blogs of a particular topic. Allows you to find influencers that may affect your brand.
TweetDeck displays all your social network feeds in one app.

In addition to updating all of my pages, I have started using these tools as well. I am going to start blogging more so that I can keep my audience in touch with what is going on. This post is a bit off topic as it is more personal than most of the future ones will be, however it does relate to technology in terms of websites and new social media practices. Expect to hear more from me!

Holy Video Games Batman!

I've been reading about how fantastic the new Batman: Arkham Asylum game is, so I decided to pick it up from Blockbuster tonight, and I must say it has not disappointed. Graphics look great in 1080p, audio sounds good, and it's controls are intuitive while the game is laid out very simply which still makes for a challenge without being easy. This is definitely a video game that can be played multiple times. I'm sure I'll shed some tears when it's time to return it.

I haven't had a chance to play the new Beatles Rockband but my interest is definitely peaked, I do like the sound of remastered (up to) 7.1 channels of audio.

Some Shiny New Toys Will Be Arriving Soon

The ASUS UL series notebooks will definitely be something every pc/mac fan will envy. Styled similarly to Macbooks with an aluminum finish and nicely spaced backlit keyboard, ranging in size from 13-15 inches.

The Zune HD launch is nearing, and I'm actually excited about it. I've got my name in a drawing for a free 16GB, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and I even downloaded Zune Marketplace in anticipation. Come to find out the Marketplace incorporates a fairly robust social networking site, I wish that there was a little tighter integration with 360 however.

Im still debating wether or not an eReader is a worthy investment at this point, I like the concept but I think I might wait until more textbooks are available.

As the holiday season quickly approaches I'm sure manufactures will be churning out new stuff in early November after Windows 7 launches, so who knows what exciting new features will be packed in to some of these notebooks.

Apple Event was a bust (Updated)

The Apple event today revealed iPod nano's now have camera's equipped with video, and updated capacities and prices on iPod Touch's. I'm still holding my breath on the heavily rumored blogosphere proclaimed "jesus tablet". Anybody else have an opinion on these new iPods?

Update: looks like these aren't in Best Buy stores yet, but will be arriving in the next week or so.
